Humans are naturally born with imperfections. Some more blessed than others, and some who are unfortunately born with disabilities. The word disability refers to a wide range of conditions that makes it hard for a person to do day-to-day activities. Some people may think that it's hard to understand them well, in fact, it's not. It's just people don't exert enough effort to know them better, so here are some of the things you have to understand about people with disabilities (PWDs). 1. They Are People Too
PWDs although they have some difficulties with doing some things, are not very different from us. Treat them like how you treat an average person, with the same amount of respect and understanding. Don't make a big deal out of their disabilities. It can make them feel weaker and lesser of a person. Special treatments can be offending for them too, avoid these. Treat them the way you want anyone to treat you; all will be good then. 2. Don't Treat Them as A Spectacle When you encounter a person with a disability, don't act as if you're amazed or surprised or anything near that, especially with the ones who have assistive devices. Don't look at it or touch it like it's something to be exhibited. These devices help them live their daily lives, it's not something fascinating. The same goes for them, do not touch them without their permission. Lend your hand to them only when they ask, again they didn't want any special treatments or any attention for that matter. 3. Never Assume Things About PWDs If you don't know something, ask. It's wrong to believe things about PWDs, like what their disabilities are. Remember, not all disabilities are visible. Patience is needed for people with disabilities; it can be hard for them to open up and trust people. It'll take time but understand that it's hard for them. 4. We Are All Equal Just because they have incapacities doesn't mean that some people are actually above them. Again, they are people too. We all have the same rights, and the equal say to things. If we can get married, they can too. If we can work, they can too. They are entitled to the same rights that we have. Being prejudiced about them is wrong. Give them the chance to prove themselves. Disabilities can be inborn or acquired. Compared to those who have inborn disabilities, adapting can be harder for persons who acquire their disability at a later stage in life. Imagine living a healthy life and suddenly not being able to do it, how frightening would that be? Several factors can cause disabilities; getting disability insurance can be useful for this, especially if your work requires you to do so.
