When you think of work related accidents and injuries, you think of high risk jobs.  Physically demanding jobs that put you in dangerous environments and situations. However, you may be surprised to know how often accidents can happen within an office.  It can be hard to imagine, you usually sit all day at your desk and face the computer. However, workplace accidents do happen.
The two most common work related mishaps are car accidents and slips. Slips, falls, and trips are more common than you think. Most of the time, it may seem funny and blooper like. However it can cause injuries, and at worse even death. Slips happen when the flooring and the victim's shoes lose traction and slide. This causes a loss of balance and can lead to a fall. Here are some tips to help avoid slips, falls, and trips at the workplace.

1. Improve/Fix the lighting

One common reason for accidents is the failure to see the hazard. The area may not have the proper lighting, or a broken fixture causing a dark area. This lessens visibility and may hide a hazard that may cause an accident.  Ensure all areas, especially walkways and aisles are properly lighted.

2. Mind the flooring

One half of the problem for slips is the floor. The other half is typically the victim or his/her footwear. Let's first focus on the flooring.  Cracks, damages, missing pieces, and other irregularities can trip a worker and cause them to fall. Uneven or slippery surfaces are also a danger. Make sure all damages are fixed and the flooring is suitable for passing.

3. Remove obstructions

Exposed wires, fallen debris, and other obstructions are also a common cause for tripping. Make sure all passageways are clear of obstructions. Keep things in the proper places and keep hallways and walkways clear.  Make sure all furniture along these areas have proper bases and in good condition. Any item can potentially be an obstruction.  Clearing an area is the safest way. Make full use of storage areas.

4. Keep it clean

Many slips occur due to wet surfaces. It is important to keep floors clean. If there is any spills or wet floors, ensure they are cleaned as soon as possible. Place warning cones or signs around the wet area to warn passersby.

5. Conclusion

Accidents do not choose where they occur. Although we can not totally avoid them, we can minimize their risk.  Accidents cause injury. Injuries can prevent you from functioning normally or even working.  Make sure you have the right insurance for your protection.  At Quote Today, we put our clients first by offering them policies that they can afford.
